Integrated Business Planning on Databricks for Continuous Supply Chain Visibility

Reading time: 2 min(s)

Manufacturers are under constant pressure to respond faster to demand changes while controlling inventory and protecting service levels. Yet many planning organizations still rely on fragmented data, periodic planning cycles, and manual reconciliation across systems. This disconnect makes it difficult to understand trade-offs, respond to disruptions, and align planning decisions with business outcomes.

For this, zeb implemented an Integrated Business Planning accelerator on Databricks that unifies demand, supply, inventory, and capacity data into a governed, enterprise-ready foundation. The approach replaces disconnected planning views with a single, trusted source of truth that supports continuous planning and faster decision-making.

Building a unified demand–supply–inventory foundation

The foundation was built on Databricks to harmonize data from ERP systems, planning tools, and upstream sources. Demand signals, supply plans, inventory positions, and capacity constraints were integrated into a single planning layer. This eliminated manual reconciliation and ensured that planning teams across functions worked from consistent, trusted data.

By consolidating these datasets, manufacturers gained a clear view of how demand changes impacted supply feasibility, inventory exposure, and service levels. Planning discussions shifted from debating data accuracy to evaluating decisions and outcomes.

Enabling continuous integrated planning and visibility

Instead of relying on static weekly or monthly planning cycles, the solution enabled continuous Integrated Business Planning. Automated ingestion and refresh pipelines ensured that changes in demand or supply conditions were reflected across plans as they occurred.

This near real-time visibility allowed planners to respond faster to disruptions, re-evaluate scenarios, and adjust plans proactively. As a result, planning became an ongoing process aligned with operational realities rather than a periodic exercise.

Inventory and service level optimization in practice

To support better execution, the solution introduced analytics focused on inventory and service performance across the network. These capabilities included visibility into safety stock policies, inventory turns, and service-level attainment across plants, warehouses, and products.

Key capabilities included:

  • Identification of excess inventory and slow-moving stock
  • Early detection of potential stock-outs and service risks
  • Visibility into misaligned safety stock policies across locations

These insights enabled planners to rebalance inventory while maintaining customer service targets.

Executive planning visibility without spreadsheets

For leadership teams, zeb delivered executive dashboards that consolidated demand, supply, and inventory health into a single view. These dashboards highlighted key IBP KPIs and surfaced areas where plans were at risk.

The outcome was clear:

  • Leaders gained timely, data-driven visibility into planning performance
  • Intervention decisions were made based on current data rather than delayed reports
  • Reliance on offline spreadsheets was removed

This improved alignment between strategic objectives and operational execution.

What makes this IBP foundation different

This Integrated Business Planning approach stands apart from traditional IBP implementations built on disconnected tools.

It unifies end-to-end supply chain data directly on Databricks, ensuring all decisions are based on the same governed data. Planning shifts from periodic cycles to continuous, event-driven execution. Most importantly, planning decisions are explicitly linked to inventory investment, working capital, and productivity, rather than isolated planning metrics.

By building IBP on Databricks, the foundation is also ready for advanced forecasting, AI-driven demand sensing, and optimization use cases as business complexity grows.
